Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort (November 2024)

A driving trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for a three night stay in a 2 bedroom at Disney’s Hilton Head Resort (a Disney Vacation Club property) which opened in 1996, plus a visit to Savannah, Georgia. On the driving trip home, a stop at Buc-Ee’s in St. Augustine, FL. Total drive time from next door to Magic Kingdom to Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina, including a recharge/lunch stop was just over six hours.

While the resort opened in 1996, and I became a Disney Vacation Club Member in 2000, this was my first stay at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort. Except for the Villas at the Disneyland Hotel, which opened in 2023, I have visited all of the DVC Resorts at least once and stayed in nearly all of them too. I actually had previously visited Hilton Head Island as a kid in the late 1970s with my family and we stayed at the Sea Pines Resort on that trip. There is a separate album of photos from around Hilton Head Island itself during this trip (including Sea Pines Resort), as well as a separate album of photos of a daytime visit to nearby Savannah, GA over on Dalinka.com; plus another album features my stop at Buc-ee’s in St. Augustine, FL, during the drive home to Central Florida.

While Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort is a Disney Vacation Club Resort located in South Carolina, all of the resort’s literature and even its payment systems welcome you to the Walt Disney World Resort. The theme parks are not available by Disney Transportation from the Resort. Indeed, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is like this too — and stays there even include the opportunity to take advantage of the extra time in the parks and even early registration for DVC Moonlight Magic — but even though it’s in Florida, that would be a really big drive to make after time in the park, especially after a nighttime event that wraps up around 1 a.m. and there is no included Disney Transportation to the theme parks there either.

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort is located in the Shelter Cove Harbour area of the island, which is not actually on the Atlantic Coast. The Resort operates Disney’s Beach House on the Atlantic coast, a mile and a half away, with a “Community House,” a quick service restaurant (with fewer hours than the Beach House was open), a poolside bar (that also was not open when we visited), a heated pool, and beach access. A complimentary shuttle runs between the two places during posted hours. Our shuttle bus driver told us that DVC’s original plan was to build the whole resort at the Atlantic Coast, but it could not win approvals to do so over opposition of locals and other businesses fearful that Disney would take diners and other business opportunities away from existing businesses.
